I think body types is such an interesting conversation - I think that when approached with the right mindset, in my experience knowing my body type has been super helpful in figuring out what clothes to wear. But I also think that some of the messaging surrounding body types can be harmful, especially to those experiencing BDD, disordered eating, or an eating disorder.
I like to stick to medical news sites to start gathering information (and to figure out the legitimacy of a concept / whether it's just a trend). Medical News Today has a pretty clear explanation on body types - it's the way a person's body looks, and is "dependent on the distribution of muscle mass and fat." I think that understanding the reasoning behind why someone's looking to find their body type is also important with regards to the eating disorder/BDD world - personally, I wanted to find my body type to help me find clothes that fit me better.
There are A LOT of different theories on body types; especially around categorization. I found Ellie Jean Royden's take on body types and finding personal style super helpful. Ellie Jean is the founder of Body and Style and a YouTube channel to help all viewers "end the war with their wardrobe." I've found her YouTube channel very informative, fact-based, and also not overly focused on weight (however, content warning: she does mention her own weight gain experience in one video, and talks about how weight gain influences body type in another - the conclusion was that weight gain will not change your body type).
I think that finding your body type (which is a completely personal choice, and not something you ever need to know to have absolutely fantastic style or anything else) can be helpful with finding personal style, but it's definitely not necessary - and a topic that should be approached with a lot of thought and caution (it's a lot more important to be in the right brainspace surrounding body dysmorphia, etc.).
That said, if you'd like, I hope you explore the resources I've linked and thanks for reading! I'll see you next week. :)
